Vine pruning

Vine pruning

Over the last few weeks, a major pruning operation has begun.

The new season comes with good news !

At the beginning of march the top field has been pruned ! A week after the volunteers’ visit, the hard work of pruning the vines began.

Jessica worked with Benita, whose family owns the vineyard, Carles, a local farmer, and Angela, who is teaming up with us on the Rovira Regenerativa project.

With this wonderful team, they managed to prune 2 of the vineyard’s terraces in just 4 hours!

The first terrace appeared to have living plants. The second terrace seemed to have a lot of dead vines, but we’ll have to see what happens in the summer. They might surprise us!

And to end the day on a high… the rain came to refresh the earth…

Wonderful!

We can’t wait to see what the natural future of Boodaville has in store for us!

Finally last week, 3 more terraces of the vineyard have been pruned.

Much of this was much harder than the previous pruning because, as these vineyards has been abandoned for two years, fennel has overgrown them.

It leaves tall brittle branches that in many areas, made it impossible to access for pruning.

Some of us had to clear paths so others could prune. In a more holistic system, animals could do this role, but at this point, it was up to us !

Jessica showing a new BV friend, Trevor, how to use a scythe!

It was really interesting to observe the small differences in these terraces from the previous ones.

Where the fennel is overgron, the ground is much more moist, with green grass and lots of low, very green leafy species, and of course, new fennel sprouting everywhere.

To be continued….

Spring visit to Boodaville

Spring visit to Boodaville

Some spring news about life in Boodaville !

February start very well in Boodaville Finca with the arrival of Jessica and the new (old) Boodaville van! We’re delighted that she’ll be looking after the finca for the next 4 months.

Then, at the beginning of March, volunteers from Barcelona and Caseres visited the Boodaville estate and brought with them lots of good news!

Jessica was there to explain everything there is to know about this wonderful place!

They saw the famous “Welcome to Boodaville” sign at the entrance under a beautiful olive tree. The volunteers are also invited to tea time, sharing and enjoying the magnificent view from the field.

Jessica explained the evolution of the almond trees and they took some beautiful photos showing the life that grows in Boodaville, like the buds that sprout or the broccoli that grows.

Antonia and Frida filled the wooden hut for the rocket stove.

When the weather cooled down, the volunteers took advantage of the rocket stove.

Pauline and Antonia harvested mint in the
food forest and Jessica showed us her beautiful growing tulips.

Last week happens a big surprise in the land of Boodaville… the chickens have arrived!
We’ve got chickens in the food forest to take advantage of the alfalfa and regenerate the soil’s microbiology!
It’s also great news because alfalfa is coming back everywhere in Boodaville after a very long period of drought!

More and more developments in Boodaville as spring approaches.

Stay tuned for further developments ….

Reflexion about design

Reflexion about design

Today I want to explain my point of view about design in permaculture !

I want to talk about design and the designers of life. I recently read about the idea of design in permaculture. And this part helped me make the connection with my own life. That’s why I’d like to share this diary of the first day of March with you.

Ever since I was a child, I’ve had the feeling that my life isn’t entirely my own, or rather that my choices are directed. I’m not totally free to choose and design my life.

The obligation to go to school, to have timetables, routines and rules ….
So sometimes I used to say to myself, this life isn’t mine, I have to follow the classic path and that’s that.
But since I arrived in Barcelona everything has changed. I really feel that I can design my life the way I want.

Design is about bringing together what we have to generate the values we want. EDWARD DE BONO
We are all designers. In fact, our whole life is a design. It can be something as random as organising your day, getting involved in a project…

And the day you understand that, life becomes a lot more fun. There are 3 steps to follow: Look at where you are, become aware of where you want to go and identify the steps you need to take to get there.

It sounds very abstract and complicated but it’s not, you just need to take the time to think about it and go slowly.

Little by little, it’s a process.

I’m so grateful to be learning more about the permaculture way of life every day.

For example, more concretely, before I realised that I was the designer of my life, I might have refused to wake up at 6 in the morning to bake bread, or go hiking in the mountains for the sunset after a day’s work, or go sailing.
Because before I wasn’t very confident in the life around me. I can’t say that’s completely the case now, but it’s better.

Now I want to take the risk of doing new things. Because for me, all new things are good for growing.
Always with the three ethics, peoplecare, earthcare and fairshare.

Social Media Report

Here is summary about what's has been posting in instagram since the beginning of the year 2024 !

08/01
We continued with a big olive harvesting.
There are some pictures related this days, when almost 100kg of olives were harvested.
This harvest was left for a neighbour to add to his harvest on Monday. Lou is delighted with these cold but sunny days in Matarranya!
Also the whole Boodaville team wishes you a happy new year 2024, and looks forward to developing new sustainable projects again this year!

11/01

Then, once again this year, our volunteers have been learning about permaculture and working in the food forest. The posters down explain some of the key lessons they learned from the experience!
Thanks to the ESC programme for this incredible learning opportunity, and to Sara for these fantastic posters!

03/02

After we had the chance to have the volunteering experience conclusion of Sara.
She participate
d during one year in the project and she has learnt three things during her time at Boodaville. I let you check the beautiful pictures as she shares with you !

06/02
We are also very lucky to participate at a volunteering day in Can Masdeu.

With the photos down you can see what a day of volunteering at Can Masdeu looks like !
Basically, put your hands in the soil, see the growth of your work and enjoy the feeling.
Next, use your hands to create a meal with the vegetables you’ve harvested, accompanied by motivating music.
Finally, eat together in the sunshine and be in a good mood !

10/02
Also we really want to say thank you to Looby Macnamara for sharing her vision of life with us.
This month we started reading her book « People and Permaculture ».

It’s very interesting to put words to an abstract concept like ‘permaculture’ and
little by little, we are learning more about its principles.

Let me remind you of the most important ethics of permaculture: Earth care, People care and Faire share.

It sounds so easy and I’d love to see a world vibrant with these principles.

It’s also a lot of fun because we can discuss the book with each other and what it reminds us of.

And page after page, we create new ideas, new dreams, new perspectives.

13/02

Then Antonia make a interesting video about drought and dishes and how save water.
As many of you know by know, Barcelona is experiencing a severe drought and officially announced a state of emergency!

It has been more than 1,000 days of drought.
Water reserves have fallen below 16%.
So what can we do individually?

A lot of things!
It’s time to get creative.
To look at our everyday lives and make small changes: Washing up, for example, can be easy and efficient, as this video shows. What are your ideas to combat the drought? Leave a comment below !

16/02

Frida post a nice video recap about one month of volunteering in a permaculture proyect.

She explain her feelings : “Yet one month we arrived and I have the impression that we arrived yesterday.
This video is a resume about our reality in a permaculture project.

We vibrate with the rythm of someny things that the time look like very fast.
Also the city of Barcelona is very attractive and there is always something to do or to discover.

We sharing a lot with new people in difences activities like dance, cooking, gardening, music…

I’m very excited to follow the next 5 month like this. Follow creating, discovering, enjoying !
Accompanied always with the three ethics of permaculture, peoplecare, earthcare and fairshare !”

20/02
We have a new volunteer ! This time involved in the project Boodaville Caseres.
She tell us a bit about her life since she arrived :
“Hello, this is Pauline
I’m from France and I’m volunteering for Boodaville at a small forest school for 6 months.

This is how everyday life in a permaculture project looks like for me:

Sweet days in a lovely finca, spending time with children in nature, working with wood, singing, having a little cat, and lovely people around me.
Learning about myself and others, living together, and working on communication.
In short, these are the best things that could have happened to me.

So there is a lot to say, but in summary I feel love and happiness and invite you to come and get to know the area!”

The link to the post : https://www.instagram.com/p/C3kZTkeKkO_/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

26/02
Then Pauline make a video reflect her two month of life in volunteering in a permaculture project.
This is the link to the video : https://www.instagram.com/reel/C3zvo-_q_NF/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

26/02
Finally Antonia make a great post about the patterns in permaculture.

Unlocking nature’s blueprints: From atoms to galaxies, patterns can be found everywhere and play an important part in permaculture design. Biomimicry, or copying nature’s patterns, is what we as humans have always done and inspires sustainable design for a thriving Earth.
By observing and understanding them, we can learn to understand the principles of natural systems as well as human patterns, individually and collectively.

What patterns can you discover in your life?

Diary of a volunteer 30/01

Diary of a volunteer 30/01

Diary of a volunteer, Frida, week of 30th January

Hello starry and sunny people ! It’s Frida I’m going to tell you a little bit of my story since I have arrived here !
So my life as a volunteer began three weeks ago and it was full of new experiences and discoveries.

All my senses are called upon, whether it’s my sense of touch to help out in the community garden, my sense of sight to admire the traditional dances at folk festivals, my sense of taste and smell to prepare cakes, bread and chai for the opening day of the Can mas deu social centre, or my sense of hearing to listen to the wonderful songs around the fire.

My life here is punctuated by warm weather, a bit strange for January, but pleasant when it translates into hours of sunshine spent connecting with the earth in the garden and meeting people over a good meal made from the vegetables we have harvested.

And even when office work calls, I’m lucky enough to have a spot in the garden to do it while admiring the view of Barcelona and the sea in the distance.

My assignments here correspond perfectly to my expectations and even better, because I have a framework and directions that allow me to direct my work and my energy, but I also have a lot of freedom.
I choose how I create, I manage my time, I choose to be more involved in one task than another and the opportunities for work are varied and changing.

I am very happy and grateful to be here and I realise every day how lucky I am and that this opportunity is a precious help on my life’s journey.
